RELIEF...
Irritable Bowel Syndrome & Fibromyalgia
90-Days to A Healthier You

Melissa J. Roth, Ph.D.
Because conventional medicine has made tremendous strides in infection control and trauma treatment we are now plagued with a host of chronic illnesses that rob us of the vitality of life.  Although they are not life threatening they are life changing.  Research has not defined the causes and the pharmaceutical industry has not developed chemicals to cure them.  So far, conventional medicine has been at a loss to make the symptoms go away or to make them go away well enough for us to actually feel better.

With hypnosis, however, we can improve the quality of life for people suffering from many chronic illnesses.  Irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia are two examples of common, chronic illnesses that respond very well to hypnosis but poorly to conventional medical treatments.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

IBS is a common, chronic digestive problem. It strikes one out of five people in the general public and one out of three adult women.  It is the second most commonly cited reason for missed work days.  Typically, it strikes people in their early 20’s to the mid 30’s, the peak productive years.   However, many  clients say they have had symptoms since childhood.  The average age of diagnosis in children is 9 to 11 years old.  For adults and children alike, the symptoms tend to grow worse with age.

The symptoms are: chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea or a combination of both.  These are combined with gut pain, gut spasms, gas, bloating and a change in bowel habits.  Roughly 40% of people with IBS will also have dyspepsia and/or fibromyalgia.  Some people have a sense of urgency and others may experience nausea or other symptoms.

No one knows exactly what causes irritable bowel syndrome.  Although we know many differences between someone with IBS and someone who does not have IBS, we still haven’t been able to use that knowledge to develop safe, effective pharmaceutical treatments.

In diarrhea predominant IBS, the contractions that normally push food through the gut are stronger and last longer resulting in diarrhea. In constipation predominant IBS, however, food passage slows and stools become hard, dry and painful.  Some clients experience both diarrhea and constipation in the same day.

Regardless of the causes, IBS responds very well to hypnotherapy.  Since 1996, over 86% of my IBS clients have become and remain symptom free.  94% got at least a 50% reduction in symptoms.  The symptoms do not return when the sessions end.  The oldest person to date has been a 76 year old lady who had experienced severe IBS symptoms since she was 21.  She is now symptom free.  The youngest was a nine-year-old boy who also remains symptom free.

For people under 50 years of age only six sessions are required.  For those over 50, an average of 8 sessions is necessary.  Imagine, in as little as ninety days you could have a whole new lease on life.  No longer would you have to worry about the location of the closest bathroom or fear going out in public.  For more information about IBS relief through hypnotherapy visit www.tranceworkers.com.  Or, to locate a certified IBS hypnotherapist near you go to www.ibshypnotist.com.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia (FMS) is characterized by widespread pain in all four quadrants of the body, fatigue, non-restorative sleep disturbances, cognitive difficulties, particularly short-term memory loss and 9 out of a possible 21 tender point sites.  If these symptoms have lasted longer than three months and there is no discernable cause, then you can get a diagnosis of fibromyalgia.

Pain is the chief complaint in FMS.  It is pain in the muscles and connective tissues as opposed to pain in the joints.  It is usually a deep aching.  However, there may be some areas of the body that have more intense pain.
The sleep disturbances may be difficulty getting to sleep, staying asleep or both.  People with FMS may be exhausted but unable to get to sleep for hours. Or they fall asleep easily only to awaken after a few hours and be awake for hours before falling asleep again. They awaken as tired as when they went to bed.

Fatigue in FMS is overwhelming.  One client complained she had to rest from the exertion of getting out of bed.  Typically, FMS patients experience the need to rest or nap between 30 minutes and two hours after awakening.
Recall the last time you had a bad cold, sinus infection or the flu.  Remember those first couple of days when you ached all over and felt bad, All you wanted to do was crawl into bed and pull the covers over you.  You didn’t want to eat or shower or think.  That’s how people with fibromyalgia feel all the time.  But, since they look perfectly normal on the outside, they get no sympathy.  It is an invisible illness.

Researchers have learned many ways in which FMS patients and non-fibro people differ. However, in spite of all we have learned about FMS there remains more that we don’t know.  And, we don’t seem to be any closer to a cure.  Although there are new medications on the market for FMS, they are proving not to be as safe in widespread usage as they appeared to be in limited clinical trials.  Not only are they not effective for everyone but, there is a price to pay in side effects.  And, when you stop taking them, the symptoms return.

But Fibromyalgia responds very well to hypnotherapy.  Since 1996, over 80% of FMS clients have become and remain symptom free.  And, 97% have gotten significant and lasting symptom reductions allowing them to return to higher levels of comfort and functioning.   And, like IBS, the symptoms do not return when the sessions end.
Since hypnosis is non-invasive, it is the safest approach to use.  Hypnotherapy has been deemed “evidence based effective” by the National Institute of Health.  It has had the full recognition of the American Medical Association since 1958 predominantly for its ability to relieve pain.  There are no negative side effects with hypnosis.  Hypnosis puts immune cells back in circulation leaving you healthier.  You experience a greater sense of well-being and peace of mind.  Since a hypnotic trance is a naturally occurring phenomenon it is quick to learn. And, once learned, it can be used for a lifetime.

What would your life be like if you no longer suffered with the pain, fatigue and dysfunction of Fibromyalgia?  What would you do that you cannot do now?  For more information on hypnosis for fibromyalgia relief visit www.tranceworkers.com.  To locate a certified FMS Hypnotherapist near you visit www.fmsrelief.com.

THE BIBLE'S CONTRIBUTIONS TO HUMAN TRINITY HYPNOTHERAPY
Chaplain Paul G. Durbin, Ph.D.

The Bible has been the most influential book in my life and it still speaks something new to me each time I read it.
What is the first written record of the use of hypnosis? The first written recorded use of hypnosis is found in the book of Genesis 2:21-22, "So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon man, and while he slept, took one of his ribs and closed up in its place with flesh, and the rib which God took from man. He made woman and brought her to the man." In this incident, God used hypnosis as an anesthesia so that Adam felt no pain during the removal of his rib.

In addition to the reference in Genesis, mention of hypnotic techniques is found in other ancient sources concerning the Egyptian "Sleep Temples." In the temples, Egyptian priest used hypnotic-like procedures to improve health. These temples were so popular that they spread to Grease and Asia Minor.

Chaplain W. Leo Peacock gives a number of New Testament illustrations of hypnosis in his paper "Religious Hypnosis and Personal Control." Chaplain Peacock makes a point with his interpretation of Matthew's account of Joseph's dream concerning taking Mary as his wife (Matthew 1:20-25). When Joseph discovered that Mary was expecting a child, he decided to break his engagement for he knew that the child was not his. The story told of an "angel" or "messenger" coming to Joseph in a dream. In this dream, the angel told Joseph to marry Mary. Upon waking, Joseph did as the angel suggested. Peacock writes that this is a clear description of an individual being hypnotized and while under hypnosis being given a post-hypnotic suggestion which he immediately acts upon as soon as he came out of the hypnotic trance.
Paul speaks of going into a trance while praying in the temple (Acts 22:17). Peter "fell into a trance" and from that experience came to see that God loved all people and accepts all people who come to him. Peter had been invited to the home of a centurion who was devout in his faith, but was not Jewish. At that time, it was religiously unlawful for Peter to visit the centurion's house. After the dream, Peter went to visit the centurion (Acts 10:1-48).

The practice of "laying on of hand," mentioned in the Bible, uses some of the techniques of hypnosis. In the book of Acts (28:8) we read, "And it came about that the father of Publius was lying in bed afflicted with recurrent fever and dysentery; and Paul went in to see him and after he prayed, he laid his hands on him and healed him." Elsewhere in the book of Acts, there is a reference to an apostle looking into the eyes or gazing into the eyes of a person which resulted in the person being healed. "This man was listening to Paul as he spoke, who when he had fixed his gaze upon him, and had seen that he had faith to be made well, said with a loud voice, 'Stand upright on your feet.' And he leaped up and began to walk." (Acts 14:9-10).

Jesus often spoke in parables or stories which still bring to mind vivid pictures which tell us something important about life. The parables can have a different meaning to us at different times in our lives. One of the principles of hypnosis is repetition and there are two of Jesus' parables (The Friend At Midnight and The Unjust Judge) which speak to this issue. In the parable of the "Friend At Midnight" (Luke 11:5-10), Jesus tells of a man who knocks at his neighbor's door at midnight and request some food for a friend who has arrived at his house unexpectedly. At first the friend said, "Do not brother me. " but because the man is persistent, the friend will get up and give him as much food as he needs. What does this have to do with hypnosis? At first the subconscious (the friend next door) is resistant to change but through persistence, in the use of hypnotherapy, the subconscious will grant what is requested. Jesus concludes the parable, "Ask and it shall be give to you , seek and you shall find; knock it will be opened to you. For everyone who ask receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it shall be opened. "

In the parable of "The Unjust Judge" (Luke 18:1-8), Jesus told the story of a judge who does not fear God and respects no one. A widow keeps coming before him for protection from her opponents. As the woman persists, even after being turned down several time, the judges says, "Because she bothers me, I will give her legal protection. Just by continually coming, she wears me out." I leave the parable for your interpretation.

The idea of the human trinity came to me from the Bible for there I learned that we are made up of body, mind, and spirit and each affects the others and are affected by the others.

Paul writes of the human trinity in the twelfth chapter of the book of Romans. Paul wrote, "I beseech you therefore brethren by the mercy of God, that ye present your body as a living sacrifice, holy acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service and be not confined to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God." (Romans 12:1-2).

In God's sight, the body and mind as well as the spirit are important. The body is the temple of God, and the place where the spirit dwells for Jesus said, "The Kingdom of God is within you." From Romans, I hear God saying through Paul that real worship is more than the offering of great prayers. It is more than the offering to God of a ritual, however magnificent. Real worship is the offering of everyday life to God.

The renewing of the mind calls for a change in attitude. It calls for us to let go of any negative thought because they can be a block to living life to its fullest. God wants us to realize our talents, our abilities, our potential, and with divine guidance to use them for our own good and for the good of others. He leads to look into the heart (subconscious) and mind (conscious) to see our potential and our possibilities rather than our failures and limitations. In the Bible, one can find several references to hypnotic like activities. For instance, the first written record of the use of hypnosis is recorded in the book of Genesis 2:21-22, "So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh, and the rib which God took from man, he made woman and brought her to him." In this incident, God used hypnosis so that Adam felt no pain during the removal of his rib.

Paul speaks of going into a trance while praying in the temple (Acts 22:17). Peter "feel into a trance" and from that experience came to understand that God loves all people and accepts all people who come to him (Acts 10:1-18). Through the book of Acts, there are a number of references to the apostles looking into the eyes or gazing into the eyes which resulted in the person being healed (Acts 14:9-10). The practice of "laying on of hands" mentioned in the Bible uses some of the techniques of hypnosis (Acts 28:8).

The writer of Proverbs 23:7 said that as a person thinketh in his heart, so is he. St. Paul wrote, "Whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap."(Gal. 6:7) This says to me that what is sown by the conscious mind through thoughts and images into the subconscious mind tends to become a reality. Mental images give the subconscious mind a model to work toward for good or bad. The use of positive imagery improves life and health. Until there is an image in the mind, there can be no reality. The author of Proverbs 29:18 also wrote that were there is no vision, the people parish.
Jesus said, "The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because... he sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, and set at liberty them that are bruised." (Luke 4:18) Following that guidance and the proper use of hypnosis, we can heal the brokenhearted, bring deliverance to those in captivity to pain, fear, and phobias; give sight to the emotionally and spiritually blind, and set at liberty those who are bound by unwanted habits.

HYPNOSIS FOR PAST LIFE REGRESSION
Kathy Moore, MBA, BCH
Past Life Regression is one of those topics you are either fascinated by or you think it’s a pile of horse pucky. For me, as a professional hypnotist, the category in which you fall doesn’t really matter. Past Life Regression is a wonderfully integrating tool that CAN work for you.

There’s really no way to prove whether past life sessions are a reality or not. Despite the famous Bridie Murphy case, most participants can’t go back and document the prior life because they don’t always get that much detail from the session. In my experience, clients typically know whether they are male or female and approximately how old they are during the various scenarios they remember. But they may or may not know: where they are living, what year it is, and their name.

However, regardless of the amount of information that is retrieved, in my experience, clients almost always come away feeling “more integrated” or “whole.” These are invariably the words they use in describing to me the shift in their thinking.

Why would I recommend past life therapy? Here are a few good reasons:

(1). You feel stuck in some area of your life, but no one can find the reason anywhere in this lifetime. On countless occasions, I have found the roots of a client’s depression or anxiety in another lifetime: inexplicable worry about a child (a child who was lost to them in a previous lifetime); fear of dying at a certain age or by some terrible means (it happened then or that way in another life, or it keeps happening); weird fascination with a certain person, personality type or place (unrequited love or unfinished business in another lifetime.)

(2). You have a prodigy’s ability with some craft or trade that you have never tried before and need desperately to understand why. One of my hypnosis students was a natural when he picked up woodcarving. Other wood carvers told him he carved like someone who had been doing it for 20 years. Upon regressing him, we discovered that he was a coffin maker in France in the 1800’s and did beautiful hand-craved doors for the churches where he lived. The benefit of reliving the experience for him was that he remembered and released the grief of carving coffins for all his family members. This cathartic experience allowed him to release even more creativity and to integrate that “stuck creativity” into his present personality.

(3). You have pain or illness that cannot be explained from this lifetime, or you were born with a birth defect. In my own case, I was born with a staph infection in my left breast and knew from a very early age, for no apparent reason, that I did not want to and would not have children in this lifetime. In one of my earliest past-life sessions, I went back to a place called Lucerne in the 1600’s. I was a monk in a monastery orphanage, a place surrounded by beautiful golden trees that looked like aspens. We were besieged and all the children were died. I died from an arrow through my left breast. Several years after that experience, I had a client tell me about a place they had visited on a favorite vacation, a place called Lucerne, with beautiful golden trees.

(4). You suddenly are behaving in a way totally foreign to you. A few years ago, I suddenly felt suicidal for no apparent reason. I am an unusually happy person almost all the time, so the experience was rather confusing for me. I knew instinctively it had nothing to do with this lifetime, so I asked my friend and fellow hypnotist, Ed, to do a past-life session for me. This session actually turned into a progression. I was a medical officer on a space ship. We were taken over by an alien race and were told to conduct life-threatening experiments on the crew. Rather than agree, we made a suicide pack.

This last session actually highlights several interesting qualities about past life regressions. First, they are not all about the past. If you believe as Einstein did, and as I do, that time isn’t really real, then you can just as easily have a future progression as you can a past life. We simply call them past-life because they are more common and no other term has been developed that I know of yet.

Second, it’s even harder to validate a progression than a regression. But they are every bit as integrating. Immediately after the session, the suicidal thoughts disappeared never to return. And, I wish I could adequately describe to you how extraordinarily integrating the experience was for me.

Third, the experience broadened my view of reality. Before it, I would have rigidly told you that under no circumstances would I ever take my own life. That belief is no longer true for me. I’m not sure exactly what energy got freed up by letting go of that limiting belief. All I can say is that I had a renewed since of vitality afterwards.

Above are some valid reasons for having a past life regression. However, many clients experience them initially just out of curiosity and that is okay, too. A word of warning if you are considering it: Don’t try too hard. Let your imagine run free. Don’t censor yourself. Describe whatever comes to mind even if it doesn’t make any sense at first. The more you open yourself to the experience the more powerful and beneficial it will be for you.

THE FUTURE OF DENTAL HYPNOSIS IS NOW!!!
Sue Hull, Hypnotherapist
I am so excited to pass the following information on to you all!!!

Those of you who have taken dental hypnosis classes from Scott Sandland and I over the past months and those who were at Robert Otto's IMDHA/IACT Conference Keynote Address know that Scott and I have been approved to teach a dental hypnosis class to dental professionals by the American Dental Association! Participants will receive 16 hours of credits through the ADA and will be exposed to modern dental hypnosis in a big way!

I have attached the information from the class website which also includes where dental professionals can go to register for the class. We already have dentists registered and it is important to all of you to have a full class in August in Newport Beach, CA. Once this first class is taught we can schedule others throughout the country (coming to a dental office near you.......!).

Just think of all the ways this is important to us as hypnotists!!! ........ The American Dental Association says that Dental Hypnosis is worthy of 16 hours of continuing education! More dental professionals in your area are taught to use hypnotic principles in their practices and to work with well trained dental hypnotists!

When you realize the sheer numbers of people you can help with appropriate dental hypnosis you will know the magnitude of this break through! - 10% of adults in the United States have NEVER been to the dentist because of fear! 1/3 of adults who HAVE been to the dentist at least once in their lifetime are "profoundly" afraid of the dentist. 60-70% of all dental patients have some form of problem with their TMJ (joints of their jaws). Then add in the numbers of people we can help with dental pain relief as well as pain prevention......! Add to that the need for relaxation and stress relief for all the dentists and their staff members who are involved with these people and the numbers become too big to add up!!! This really only scratches the surface of all the areas in which we can help in the dental field!

Once dentists and hygienists learn why and how to work with well trained dental hypnotists, the next question they ask is, “where do I find someone like this to refer to or to work in my office?”. That’s where our classes for certifying dental hypnotists come into the picture. We will be teaching those classes in the cities where the trained dental professionals practice. When you have dental professionals from your area who take the ADA class that will bring the certified dental hypnotist class to your area.

So please pass the information below on to dentists and hygienists who might be interested in making their personal and professional lives less stressful and more fun filled. Start by talking to YOUR dentist and hygienist. This can be a great talking point to open the door with them about what you do and the possibilities of how you can complement their practice. Help us fill this first ADA approved class so we CAN schedule the next one in an office near you along with a certified dental hypnotist class. There is a limit to the number of participants in this first class so act soon.

Thanks for sharing in my excitement and thanks in advance for your help!!! The future of Modern Hypnosis is before us and Dental Hypnosis is a big player in that future!

Fibro What?
Melissa Roth, C.Ht., Ph.D., Alabama Hypnotherapy Center

On the next several linked pages, you will find Melissa's suggestions and other information to help you deal with fibromyalgia, IBS, hypertension and pain.

Fibromyalgia (FMS) is a frustrating and seldom understood illness. It is a collection of confusing and often contradictory symptoms which come and go and vary in intensity. It’s chief characteristic is widespread pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons. It is also characterized by stiffness, fatigue and non-restorative sleep. While it is not life threatening, it is life changing. It can be as debilitating as rheumatoid arthritis. 25% of all FMS sufferers become disabled and 36% of all social security disability payments currently go for fibromyalgia. It is a chronic illness with a hefty price tag. It accounts for 10% of all visits to physicians. Yet, there are no effective conventional medical treatments for this chronic illness.

FMS is particularly frustrating because the sufferer appears healthy and normal on the outside but feels miserable on the inside. Eight times more women are affected than men. It strikes all races, all ages, all socio-economic levels and all educational levels. It is often found in the company of other related illnesses such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), spastic bladder (urinary urge incontinence), chronic fatigue, headaches, migraines, allergies, myofascial pain syndrome, mitral valve prolapse and more.

Traditional treatments aim at improving the quality of sleep and reducing pain using a cocktail of medications. Unfortunately, the side effects of the medications can be as debilitating as the illness. Recent research confirms that a multi-disciplinary approach which includes cognitative behavioral therapies, such as hypnosis, provides the greatest relief from symptoms and the best prognosis for a return to more normal levels of functioning. This approach includes improving the quality of sleep, proper nutrition, physical conditioning and deep relaxation combined with positive mental imagery (techniques used in hypnotherapy). By combining therapies, the patient can frequently return to a healthier state and a more active lifestyle while lessening or, in some instances, eliminating the need for medications, especially pain medications. My clients have averaged a 46% reduction in pain medication usage.

In a study published in the Journal of Rheumatology, 40 refractory fibromyalgia patients (FMS patients who had failed to relieve their symptoms with traditional medical treatments) were randomly assigned to treatment with either hypnotherapy or physical therapy. The patients in the hypnotherapy group showed significantly better outcomes with respect to pain reduction, fatigue on awakening, sleep patterns and global assessments. In addition, those patients who received hypnotherapy showed a significant improvement in their overall levels of discomfort and were able to reduce their levels of pain medications. The authors concluded that hypnotherapy was effective in relieving the symptoms of Fibromyalgia.

This and similar studies corroborate what we have found at Alabama Hypnotherapy Center. We have been using and teaching hypnotherapy for the relief of FMS symptoms for over four years. Over 96% of FMS patients have shown significant and lasting improvement in their overall symptoms, especially in the areas of pain reduction, improved sleep patterns and increased energy levels. In addition, they have been able to reduce or eliminate their pain medication levels between 30% and 100% (average of 46%). All clients have been able to significantly increase their levels of daily functioning. Even more importantly, they have been able to maintain these improvements even after their hypnotherapy sessions end.

If you have fibromyalgia and are interested in how hypnotherapy can help you alleviate symptoms and return you to a higher state of functioning, go to the HYPNOSIS ASSOCIATES section of this web site, click on Fibromyalgia Associates and scroll down to your state or country for a fibromyalgia certified hypnotherapist near you or call us at 205/933-5705 to request a referral to a specially trained FMS certified hypnotherapist. All our FMS certified hypnotherapists work as a team member with your personal physicians to help you return to a more normal state of health.

I developed this therapy to alleviate my own disabling FMS symptoms. I have been symptom free since 1997 and take no medications for fibromyalgia. You do not have to "learn to live with it."

BestWishes,

Melissa J. Roth, CHt., Ph.D.

 Healing IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

IBS is a frustrating and often debilitating chronic illness characterized by diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, bloating and spasms. Conventional medical treatment includes a variety of medications, a high fiber diet, fiber supplements and behavioral changes. The behavioral changes include exercise, stress reduction and dietary changes. Unfortunately, this regime has not been proven adequately effective for a high percentage of sufferers. In addition, many people find the side effects of the medications to be more noxious than the IBS Symptoms. Either reason results in poor compliance. And, of course, when your stop taking the medications and supplements, the symptoms return.

However, hypnotherapy has been proven highly effective in alleviating IBS symptoms. Over 25 years of solid scientific research has demonstrated hypnotherapy as an effective, safe and inexpensive choice for IBS symptom alleviation. Hypnotherapy routinely produces positive results in over 80% of the people who use it. It has been so overwhelmingly successful for IBS symptom alleviation that Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD, chair of the National Women's Health Network in Washington, DC, says that hypnosis should be the treatment of choice for IBS cases which have not responded to conventional therapy.

At Alabama Hypnotherapy Center, our work with IBS Clients has resulted in a reduction of symptoms for 93.7% of our clients and 86% have become symptom free within the course of therapy. Melissa Roth, the developer of the program, has remained syptom free since 1996 from severe, debilitating IBS symptoms. We work with clients on a one-on-one basis in our offices, or for clients at a distance, the session area available on CD's. This is a program done in conjunction with your personal physician and is not intended as a replacement for traditional medical treatment.

Conventional medical treatment has been inadequate in alleviating IBS symptoms for most people. However, hypnotherapy combined with traditional medical treatment can provide dramatic relief for most sufferers. Most of our clients, with the help of their personal physicians, have been able to reduce or eliminate most or all of the medications and supplements they were taking for IBS symptoms. To locate a certified IBS hypnotherapist near you go to the HYPNOSIS ASSOCIATES section of this web site and scroll down to your state or your country. If you are a certified hypnotherapist and would like training and certification in this therapy program, email us at info@tranceworkers.com or call 205/933-5705.
